Chicago Bears Senior Bowl Quarterback Watch: Jamie Newman

After transferring from Wake Forest to Georgia last year, Jamie Newman opted out of the 2020 season. However, he’s suiting up Saturday for the Senior Bowl and will play his first real football in a while.

Though he never actually played a down for the Bulldogs, Newman was expected to be their starter for last season, and that should count for something.

This is a quarterback who has a ton of physical attributes that pop off the tape. His mobility and overall strength make him difficult to bring down when he takes off, which is the biggest reason why NFL scouts should be watching.

Newman still needs to develop more as a passer, primarily in his overall processing. Wake Forest used an offense that allowed him to use his legs more often than not if his first or second reads weren’t there. This may not be as easy for him in the NFL, though, because defenses are much faster and smarter.

The processing has to get better. If it does, Newman has the bones of a good quarterback who could at least make a career as a solid backup. If he continues to impress at the Senior Bowl and throughout the pre-draft process, his stock will certainly rise. But, for now, he’s a developmental guy who could go in the 5-7 round area.
