Chicago Bears Senior Bowl Quarterback Watch: Mac Jones

Obviously, all eyes will be on Alabama’s Mac Jones at the Senior Bowl. He is one of the most intriguing prospects at the quarterback position in this year’s draft. At Alabama, he was surrounded by elite talent at every position. Does that fact work against him? That’s the question we all want to find out.

Jones was throwing the football to a bunch of guys who will have lengthy NFL careers this past season while having the luxury of handing the ball off to one of the top running backs in this class.

That’s not to say he isn’t qualified to be a top-tier quarterback in this class, because he is. But, Jones may be more of the game manager type than a quarterback who will be the reason his team wins games.

On the right roster, that will work sufficiently. In this case, the Bears are a team that simply needs a quarterback to make smart throws and not throw the game away. Fortunately, Jones’ game lines up nicely, there.

He still needs a strong showing at the Senior Bowl to cement himself as a potential first-round pick, but he’s a sure-fire second-rounder if he falls that far. Jones does not take a lot of risks, and he will work through his progressions well. He’s a very intelligent quarterback, although not too mobile.

If the Bears wanted a true pocket passer who operates more like a Derek Carr than a Josh Allen, Jones will be a fine pick even if he costs them their first-round selection.
