Chicago Bears draft stock: Christian Uphoff | Safety | Illinois State

Another FCS player who didn’t get to play this season, Christian Uphoff had to earn the attention and respect of NFL Scouts, and he did just that.

The big-bodied, physical safety showed not only the ability to be a great box safety with his tackling and pursuit of players with the football, but he also showed his ability to cover tight ends and wide receivers.

Uphoff has a rare combination of size and speed that would be extremely valuable at the safety position in the NFL. He is definitely best used as a box safety that can essentially play as a linebacker but has the speed the cover fast tight ends and wide receivers. He earned practice player of the week for the National Team at the safety position.

The Bears need safety help since Tashaun Gipson is not under contract next season. The Bears haven’t had a true box safety since Adrian Amos and Uphoff has the potential to develop into a player like Amos. He could be a nice player to grab in the seventh round.
