Why the Chicago Bears veteran focus should now be on Jameis Winston
By Joseph Herff
Jameis Winston will come reasonably cheap to the Chicago Bears
An advantage to the Saints essentially hiding Winston is that he will come fairly cheap now. We saw Bridgewater get a three-year, $63 million contract with the Carolina Panthers because of how good he looked in New Orleans.
I could see Winston earning himself a two-year, $12-$20 million contract with an out after one season. This would allow the team to essentially see if Winston has gotten better and give him a one-year try-out to earn his contract with Chicago.
Of course, there are plenty of risks attached to this contract since nobody has any idea what he is capable of. He could easily still be the quarterback that threw 30 interceptions and lost his team plenty of games trying to play hero ball.
On the other hand, he could be the quarterback that plays it much safer since he knows he has a defense that can help him out. Winston could change his perspective on a new team. He did look much safer when on the Saints.
Additionally, unlike many quarterbacks available, the Bears won’t need to give up draft capital for Winston. Since he is a free agent, they can target him via free agency unlike trading picks for Carr, Marcus Mariota, or Gardner Minshew.
