Allen Robinson is coming back to the Chicago Bears on a franchise tag

After playing the waiting game, Ryan Pace finally uses his franchise tag to bring back Allen Robinson on the last day that the franchise tag is available reported first by Adam Schefter.

Since the beginning of the 2020 season, there have been many rumblings via Twitter from Allen Robinson with struggles to get an extension for the star wide receiver. He has proven his worth to the Bears given his outstanding past two seasons for the Bears and deserves to be brought back. The Bears couldn’t work out an extension with him, so they franchise tagged him to bring him back for one season.

The franchise tag locks Robinson in for the 2021 NFL season on a contract worth around $18 million, which is likely less than he would desire as he could have potentially earned an upward of $20 million per season on the open market.

Robinson could hold out though for an extension or demand a trade if he isn’t satisfied with the Bears tagging him. At 27-years-old, Robinson could be seeing his last major contract and wants to get it after racking up over 2,400 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns over the past two seasons.

The Bears could use Robinson in a tag-and-trade scenario. Regardless, it was a smart move by Ryan Pace tagging their best player on offense currently. Letting him hit the open market and letting him walk for nothing would have been idiotic. Now, if they want to move on from him, they could get draft capital for him or players.
