Seahawks won’t trade Russell Wilson to the Chicago Bears if they restructure

The first big clue to be on the lookout for is if the Seattle Seahawks restructure Russell Wilson’s contract. Just as Russell Wilson has a no-trade clause in his contract that allows him to be in control of his destination spot should the Seahawks move on from the quarterback, the Seahawks have the right to restructure Russell Wilson’s contract without his permission.

As we head into free agency frenzy week, the Seahawks have roughly $21 million dollars in cap space. Should the team see the need to sign some top free agents that may lead to more costly contracts, Seattle could restructure Russell Wilson’s contract and save around another $12 million.

As of now, the Seahawks have yet to make this move, but as free agency kicks up a notch, making this move would not only free up cap space, it would also mean that Russell Wilson will not be departing Seattle in 2021.

This same scenario happened for the Chicago Bears when they restructured Khalil Mack and Eddie Jackson’s contracts. Neither are likely to be involved in a trade now that the team shifted money around in their contracts.
