Blueprint to fix the Chicago Bears after Andy Dalton disaster
The Chicago Bears have made plenty of fans angry this week. No one can blame them for not landing Russell Wilson, but the consolation prize of Andy Dalton is not what anyone wanted to see. Nothing against Dalton, he’s a slight upgrade over Nick Foles. However, every Bears fan should feel disappointed when it felt like Wilson was within reach but instead, Andy Dalton is now looking like the starter for 2021.
There is no way that Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy are going to allow this team to move forward in 2021 with Dalton and Nick Foles under center, right? All I know is that if I were running this team, things would look vastly different right now.
Chicago Bears are stuck with the Andy Dalton situation because of past mistakes
Remember when I said we cannot blame Ryan Pace for not being able to convince the Seattle Seahawks to move on from Russell Wilson? This is true, but he is at fault for where the team is at right now with the quarterback position. As a Mitch Trubisky supporter, I do not completely fault Pace for taking him in 2017. It would not have been my move had I been running the team. I would have stayed at No. 3 overall and taken one of Trubisky or Deshaun Watson.
Yes, I would have also passed, and missed out, on Patrick Mahomes. Watson was my top choice in the 2017 draft and would have loved to see Chicago take him with the third-overall pick. Unfortunately, yes, I would have taken Trubisky over Mahomes.
The biggest problem is how Ryan Pace has not done the one thing he said all teams should do — draft a quarterback every year. Now, that might be a little bit of overkill, especially when you trade away multiple first-round picks for Khalil Mack, but outside of Mitch Trubisky, Pace’s quarterback solutions have included Mike Glennon, Nick Foles and now Andy Dalton. I guess you can count Chase Daniel and Tyler Bray too. Yuck.
Despite the current situation, there is a light at the end of the tunnel should Pace choose to be creative and maybe a little aggressive — aggressiveness is not something Pace lacks. Here is how I would handle the offseason even with the Andy Dalton acquisition.
