Chicago Bears trade up for unexpected superstar in 7-round mock draft
The Chicago Bears select another late-round cornerback to compete in 2021
Losing Kyle Fuller is going to hurt badly this season — even more so if Desmond Trufant cannot stay healthy. The Chicago Bears turned to the NFL Draft last season to help build up the cornerback position by drafting Jaylon Johnson. I do not think Ryan Pace had any intentions of losing Fuller this season, but then COVID-19 happened.
Now, the defense will be counting on Jaylon Johnson to man the outside as CB1. Trufant will likely be the CB2 while new defensive coordinator Sean Desai will need to determine who will be the slot corner (CB3). The team brought back Artie Burns to help with depth and still have Kindle Vildor and Duke Shelley. Vildor is my early favorite to be the CB3 on this defense.
To help add some competition to the mix, Ryan Pace takes another look at a late-round corner in this mock draft. Olaijah Griffin is a five-star recruit who landed with USC. He is the son of Warren G, not as if that will help him on the football field. Griffin has good height at 6’0″ but comes in a little light at only 175 pounds. He will need to bulk up in order to be able to contend against the wide receivers in the NFL, otherwise, he will be pushed around and give up too much separation.
As far as fifth-round developmental picks go, Griffin fits the bill. He has strong football instincts and attacks the ball aggressively. Although he only had one interception in his college career, that should not scare the Bears away. Griffin this late makes a great addition as the Bears change their focus to the offensive side of the ball.
