Signing Andy Dalton looks like a waste of a year for the Chicago Bears

Last offseason, Ryan Pace could have had Andy Dalton via free agency instead of dealing for Nick Foles. Now, he’s stuck with both, and neither appears to be the answer for this team.

Dalton is on a $10 million deal for just one year, but the immediate future doesn’t exactly look bright for the Bears at the quarterback position. The team is also paying Foles what equates to a $6.7 million cap hit this season.

Barring a trade, the team is stuck with these two veterans for 2021. Would Pace really think about drafting another quarterback and go with three on the depth chart this year? It’s not completely out of the question, but no matter what, Dalton looks like he’s going to be a total waste of money.

Let’s say the Bears do draft a quarterback. Whether or not it’s in the first round is irrelevant, because the minute Dalton struggles, there will be a storm brewing. Fans and media will want to see Matt Nagy make a change and go with the rookie (assuming it’s a quarterback drafted in the first four rounds).

Dalton won’t last long if the Bears draft a quarterback. That’s the point, here. If the Bears don’t draft a quarterback, then Dalton is your 2021 starter and the team likely finishes with between 7-to-9 wins — again.

How do we feel about another mediocre season? Not great, Bob. Dalton’s signing will go down as a waste.
