With Tashaun Gipson signed, are Chicago Bears done adding S
The Chicago Bears re-signed Tashaun Gipson to a one-year deal. This is not the biggest surprise after Gipson had a strong season next to Eddie Jackson, but there was a thought that the Chicago Bears would at least wait until after the NFL draft to add a safety. If a safety that they could not pass on was there, they may not need Tashaun Gipson.
So, the question remains with Gipson now signed. If the safety they have rated as the best player available is on the board, would the Chicago Bears add a safety? You could argue both ways.
However, the point may be that the Bears signed Gipson because they did not rate any of the safeties high enough to select them. Sure, they may have Trevon Moehrig highly rated, but they likely have so many offensive linemen and other positions higher that Moehrig is much further down their board.
When you look at the Bears depth chart at safety, it is unlikely that they would draft one at all next weekend.
Tashaun Gipson would not sign if he was not going to be given his role as a starter back. At the least, he would have a chance to earn it. Next to him is Eddie Jackson, followed by Deon Bush, and DeAndre Houston-Carson. That does not even mention that Marqui Christian and Jordan Lucas are still on the roster.
With Bush, they have a viable third safety, and with DHC they have a special team ace. Who could they draft and at what round would somebody be able to come in and compete with anyone this roster? Who would be getting cut in that situation? They would either need to have starter upside, be a special teams star off the bat, or be able to play a hybrid linebacker role immediately.
The Chicago Bears have needs at wide receiver, quarterback, cornerback, and offensive line. They do not need to draft a safety.
