Chicago Bears Round 2, Pick No. 59 via CLE

With the first pick, I picked an instant impact player who is also a foundational piece. I follow up Bateman with a true foundational piece who won’t impact the game right away in Davis Mills out of Stanford. Mills ranks as the seventh-best quarterback according to my 2021 NFL Draft Big Board.

After initially backing up K.J. Costello, Mills took over for him with an injury and eventually out-performed him forcing Costello to transfer. Mills then started six games in 2019 completing 65.6% of his passes for 1,960 yards,11 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He only got to play in five games in 2020 unfortunately completing 66.2% of his passes for 1,508 yards, seven touchdowns, and three interceptions. Mills clearly doesn’t have much tape, but he still is climbing up boards.

Mills has all the traits to be a high-end NFL quarterback. He has the prototypical size paired with incredible arm talent. Mills isn’t a great athlete, but he isn’t a slouch either. His passing technique is very impressive and his footwork is solid for someone with little experience. Mills just has an extremely impressive arm to hit any spot on the field with relative ease and he has plenty of developmental traits.

Having both Andy Dalton and Nick Foles allows the Bears to draft a quarterback later and develop one. Dalton with a solid offensive line and weapons will be a serviceable quarterback that can teach Mills plenty about reading a defense and learning an NFL offense. Foles has the veteran experience as well and even won a Super Bowl. Their quarterback room is a solid room for a young rookie to sit in on and learn plenty to develop as long as Foles isn’t traded.
