Chicago Bears should consider Zac Thomas as a developmental prospect

I could talk Chicago Bears football all day. This is a prime example of discussing one player that I view the Chicago Bears should draft, yet I can’t sum up the player quickly. I need to give you the entire run down. If Feleipe Franks is Kyle Traks but with more God-given talent, what is Zac Thomas?

Zac Thomas has had a bit of a different college career than Franks. Thomas is also projected to be drafted sometime on day three. Thomas is the standard three-year starter that went to the same college for four years and has been as consistent as one could become. Thomas is a much different build. He is listed at 6’1″ and 205 pounds. Which is much smaller than when compared to Franks who stands at 6’6″ and 228 pounds.

The three-time All Sunbelt Player of the Year has only lost six games during his tenure in college. Both quarterbacks ran a solid 4.5X 40-yard dash. Thomas fits the Matt Nagy model too. Thomas is intelligent, processes the field well, and has mobility.

Thomas does not have a rocket cannon for an arm, but he does have more zip than Kyle Trask and Mac Jones. The height would be a big concern for most NFL general managers, but the Chicago Bears have a history with extraordinarily tall and short quarterbacks. Neither size would deter the front office from adding Thomas to the mix. When Thomas is in rhythm (think Foles vs. Atlanta game), he is unstoppable. The competition and height will be the hardest thing to get around.

I feel I need to stress that his arm is more powerful than what most will share. The reason you are going to hear that he has a weak arm is due to him being a timing thrower. Thomas likes to make sure his passes are accurate and on time.

If you watch some game film of Thomas, there are rare moments where he tries to fit the ball between two defenders. I don’t believe that he doesn’t make those throws because he can’t. Instead, Thomas feels he can make a better decision before unleashing the ball into dangerous situations. Don’t let the Zac Thomas doubters steer you in the other direction. While he might not be ready to start today, putting some seasoning on the steak will make it taste just right.
