Any Edge Rusher
I get it, Robert Quinn was a disaster last season. However, Ryan Pace throwing more assets on top of his sunk costs on Quinn to fix the issue would not help matters. Still, you see it discussed more and more by people connected to the Chicago Bears and in the NFL media. Kwity Paye, Jaelen Phillips, Jayson Oweh, Azeez Ojulari. If they fall Chicago should pass.
To start, even if Quinn is an issue, the defensive line is not the problem. Pace not only invested in the big four but signed Jeremiah Attachou, and traded a pick in this draft for Trevis Gipson. He also signed Angelo Blackson to add to the front as is. If the Bears go defense, it has to be on the back end, where they just cut Kyle Fuller and were shuffling bodies late last season.
Beyond that, even if the defense gets worse, it has to be time for Ryan Pace to invest in the offense. Lastly, these prospects are not worth shooting your shot at 20.
Phillips has it all on tape but has an injury list that makes Kevin Whites’ medical report look short. Oweh did not record a single sack last season. That is a huge risk regardless of the upside. Ojulari had a 7.27 3-cone. Of the top 10 pass rushers over the past three seasons, only 2 had that high on a three-cone. His agility is a question that limits the ceiling.
Lastly, Paye has a lot of upside but did not produce much either, although more than Oweh. However, this is a player who plays with his hand down and slides inside at times. If we know anything about Vic Fangio he likes edge rushers who can play on their feet. Will Sean Desai feel the same way? Paye is not even a scheme fit.
Drafting a sack getter is great, but these guys are big risks for the Bears at pick 20.
