Chicago Bears insider Adam Hoge might have put the BGO community into a vomit-induced spin cycle with his latest mock draft. Showing the Chicago Bears trading down in the first round to gain draft capital to then trade up in round two, the Chicago Bears’ first two draft selections were very aggressive for what would be expected.
I find it ironic that today Adam Hoge did his final mock draft including a sixth-round quarterback (assuming) in the first round a day after J.T. O’Sullivan (the QB School) released his quarterback rankings. If you are not following either of these guys on Twitter, you are doing it wrong.
The future with the Chicago Bears does not include Andy Dalton. Unless Dalton plays better than Alex Smith and wins a Super Bowl this year, Dalton will likely be looking for a new home or playing the backup role in 2022.
I will get back to Hoge’s mock draft in a bit. J.T. O’Sullivan had Justin Fields as his number one prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft. The QB School based its rankings on only the players that were requested. Those players included:
- Justin Fields
- Trevor Lawerence
- Kyle Trask
- Mac Jones
- Trey Lance
- Ian Book
- Shane Buchele
- Zach Wilson
- Kellen Mond
- Davis Mills
That was not the QB Schools rankings, so don’t worry. However, Kellen Mond was ranked inside The QB School’s top five among those quarterbacks listed. Chris Simms also listed Mond inside his top-five quarterback rankings. See the trend?
The Chicago Bears need a quarterback, could this one be the answer?
I wrote a while back that the Chicago Bears need to make sure they draft one of two quarterbacks, whether that is trading up in round two or not. Both quarterbacks have either too much intelligence or raw talent to be hoping they fall to them in late round two or early three. I am a big proponent of the Bill Parcells rules of drafting a quarterback. In case you don’t know what they are, I will go through them:
- Be a three-year starter
- Graduate from college (Be a senior)
- Start 30 games
- Win 23 Games
- Have a 2:1 touchdown to interception ratio
- Complete 60% of career pass thrown.
Technically graduate from college and be a senior are two different checkmarks, but I combined them. Kellen Mond has completed all but one of those criteria. Mond failed to complete 60% of his passes but has increased his efficiency every year.
So, back to Adam Hoge. Hoge has the Chicago Bears selecting Kellen Mond in the first round. What are your thoughts on that? I have seen that some like Mond, just not as a first-round quarterback. That’s fair, but remember, what is stopping any other team from grabbing him before the Chicago Bears could get another swing at him. I am not opposed to this move, especially if they do it, just how Adam Hoge’s mock draft suggests.
