After the crazy Day One for the Chicago Bears, and even more trading action in the 2nd round as they trade up to No. 39, it’s time to fill the gaps that Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears need to take the next step as a football team. With the 39th pick, Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy did not disappoint.
The Bears sent pick No. 52, 83, and 204 for pick No. 39, and with that pick, they selected Teven Jenkins, OT out of Oklahoma State University.
While it was tough to see the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings gain some great protection with their offensive tackle picks, they’re missing something that the Bears got with their first-round pick — Justin Fields.
The Chicago Bears trade away more picks but Teven Jenkins is worth it
After seeing who the Bears selected with their 39th pick, it’s obvious that Teven Jenkins from Oklahoma State University will be able to make an immediate impact, and here’s why.
For many scouts, Teven Jenkins is a top-5 OT in this draft, and for a team that struggled with protecting its quarterback from edge rushers, this pick gives their offense a bodyguard for 1st-round pick Justin Fields.
Jenkins received a 6.42 grade from NFL.com, which puts him high up on the OT board, especially in the 2nd round.
Teven Jenkins is someone that absolutely will upgrade the offensive line, as they were a 3-year starter, and as Bears fans have found out the hard way, experience is one of the most important metrics to look at with prospects, especially if the Bears want him to make an immediate impact in the offense.
Up to this point, Pace has proven that he’s trying to put former negatives, or really just one catastrophic pick in hindsight, behind him and truck forward in the best way he and the rest of the front office can. Say what you want about Pace’s ability to draft, but this draft is proof that Pace knows the implications of his actions these three days.
With two picks under their belt, I can speak for most Bears fans and say there is a lot of reason to be excited about the upcoming season. Fields and Teven Jenkins give an immediate, positive reaction, regardless if they suit up for Week 1.
There seemed to be a negative cloud over the Bears’ organization over the past few months, but with these two picks, the clouds seem to be parting in Chicago, and with more good picks to come, this team can really make a big jump in the NFC North from last year to this year.
It’s a good time to be a Chicago Bears fan– finally!
