Larry Borom gives Chicago Bears much needed OL depth
If you think that the Chicago Bears solved all their problems on the offensive line with the selection of Teven Jenkins, you are mistaken. The offensive line is about strengths in numbers, and it is a spot where you cannot have one weak link. A big piece like Jenkins helps, but the Chicago Bears learned the hard way that they did not have the depth to compete with the best in the NFL. So, they selected Larry Borom with their first of four day-three picks to ease the depth issues.
Larry Borom has typically played at right tackle but has also spent time at left tackle and even at guard. Many think that at his size he is better to project inside to guard, but either way, he would bring power to the right tackle spot if he did play there.
The fact that Larry Borom is so versatile should speak to what the Bears are doing. They want bodies and they want to throw the best five out there. If someone goes down they do not want to be screwed and have to move pieces around. They want to know that they have someone with experience at every spot.
In a perfect world, Teven Jenkins starts at left tackle in the future and Larry Borom jumps in at right tackle. If the Bears really are able to hit that type of home run then Justin Fields will be a star.
However, in reality, Jenkins should compete and start at right tackle. Germain Ifedi and Elijah Wilkinson should not stop that. Still, Ifedi, Wilkinson, and now Borom all can play tackle and guard.
Alex Bars can do the same, and even Arlington Hambright and Lachavious Simmons bring versatility. A line that once had just had the starting five and needed so much more offically has depth all over the place. This was not a luxury or too much, this was absolutely needed depth.
