Chicago Bears Round 5, Pick No. 151 via CAR

The Bears took my advice and doubled up at offensive tackle by selecting Larry Borom out of Missouri. This pick was gained in the trade to move up in the second round with the Carolina Panthers. There were other pressing needs, but I cannot blame Pace for reinforcing the offensive line.

Adding Borom shows the Bears wanted a desire with new offensive linemen — mean, nasty, and tough tackles. Borom is just like Jenkins in that sense as he is a mauler in the run game that doesn’t care about the well-being of opposing defenders. His pass blocking is lacking, but last season, Borom allowed a 0% pressure rate on all passing plays and only allowed two sacks in his career. He is a developmental offensive tackle that has the flexibility to play offensive guard as well. Borom is a good athlete and needs his technique cleaned up before he’s ready to start. Juan Castillo can clean him up.

With Borom, the Bears can do a lot. The Bears could cut Charles Leno saving cap space and allowing Jenkins to kick out to left tackle. Then, Germain Ifedi would start at right tackle with Borom learning under him. Additionally, the Bears could groom Borom to be a right guard and stick him on the same side as Jenkins to run it behind them constantly.

Grade: B+

He’s a great value to get in the fifth round, but it wasn’t a pressing need. Still, a great pick and shows Pace is prioritizing protecting his coveted asset in Justin Fields.
