Chicago Bears: 5 NFL comparisons to David Montgomery through 2 seasons
3. LeSean McCoy
When you see Frank Gore as a good comparison to David Montgomery a light clicks and you think, yes he could have that sort of career. However, seeing that he produced similarly to Shady McCoy is a bit surprising.
Still, as you can see below, there are similarities and some differences.
Rush | Rush | Rush | Rush | Rece | Rece | Rece | Rece | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Rk | Player | AV | G | Att | Yds | TD | Y/A | Rec | Yds | TD | Y/R |
1 | LeSean McCoy | 21 | 31 | 362 | 1717 | 11 | 4.7 | 118 | 900 | 2 | 7.6 |
2 | David Montgomery | 15 | 31 | 489 | 1959 | 14 | 4.0 | 79 | 623 | 3 | 7.9 |
From yards from scrimmage perspective, McCoy Is not far ahead of Montgomery. However, there are differences in how they accumulated their stats.
McCoy had 242 fewer rushing yards but also had 127 fewer careers. On a per-carry basis, McCoy was more explosive. Where McCoy makes up for the lack of rushing yards is 277 more receiving yards. Still, that comes on 39 more catches, and from a per-catch perspective, Montgomery has been more efficient than McCoy.
This can at least give you a case to use Monty in the passing game more. McCoy went onto have five 1,000 yard seasons beyond his second year, and once again we are seeing that players who produce like Montgomery early turn out to continue to produce.
