Chicago Bears: 3 cornerbacks Darnell Mooney should circle in 2021
By Ryan Heckman
Chicago Bears, Darnell Mooney should highlight Greg Newsome II
This would be a fun player for Mooney to highlight this year for a couple of reasons. First, the Cleveland Browns have a nice, young cornerback duo now after drafting Greg Newsome II in the first round. Taking on a premier duo is always a fun challenge for a pair of wide receivers like Mooney and Allen Robinson.
Denzel Ward will likely be matched up on Robinson for most of this game, giving Mooney the second starter in Newsome.
This will be the Bears’ first and only opportunity to get a shot against one of the top-four cornerbacks drafted in this year’s draft, too. Newsome was the fourth cornerback off the board, going to Cleveland at pick no. 26.
Mooney was a rookie last year, so getting the chance to welcome a rookie to the NFL this year should be high on his priority list. Receivers take a lot of pride in how they play against top corners, especially if they are a highly-drafted rookie.
Newsome played in just three games last year for Northwestern but came up with a whopping seven passes defended. He’s phenomenal at disrupting passes, totaling 20 passes defended in 17 games in college.
