Chicago Bears pre-training camp offensive positional group grades
By Joseph Herff
Ryan Pace made a few changes to the Chicago Bears offense for the 2021 season. He not only went out and got their new franchise quarterback, but he additionally added new weapons and offensive line help as well.
After back-to-back seasons of lackluster and disappointing offenses, Pace brought in new help for Matt Nagy. As previously written, there truly are no more excuses for Nagy to have a bad offense with the weapons and help Pace brought in for him. How good is each group though now that most are reconstructed?
Chicago Bears Quarterbacks
- Justin Fields (R)
- Andy Dalton
- Nick Foles
Nick Foles is the only returning quarterback to this group from the 2020 season. He had a rough season after looking great in relief of Mitchell Trubisky against the Atlanta Falcons. After that, he never quite looked the same and struggled. He likely is only here to be the third quarterback since he is under contract and they can’t get rid of him.
The Bears brought in Andy Dalton then to be their starter this offseason on a one-year deal. Dalton looked solid at times for the Dallas Cowboys, but their injury-riddled offensive line did him no favors. He has been named the starter as of now as well for the 2021 season, but we truly don’t know how that will go.
Then, the Bears traded up to draft Justin Fields who fell to the 11th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. Fields has a lot of physical traits that could help him develop into an elite quarterback. He additionally is very NFL-ready, so Fields may win the starting job at training camp.
Grade: B
The old adage goes “if you have two quarterbacks, you have no quarterbacks” and that’s kind of fitting for this season. For the future, this grade could be much better if Fields takes over full-time, but with Dalton being named the starter right now, the group is just solid.
