Chicago Bears: 5 players who could surprisingly still be cut
By Ryan Heckman
The Chicago Bears could opt to cut Damien Williams
When the Bears signed Damien Willians this offseason, it looked like a much-needed addition. Finally, the Bears invested in a true backup running back for David Montgomery. This is a guy who could handle the load if Montgomery ended up going down. After all, he was a huge part of the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl win two seasons ago.
But, the Bears do have Tarik Cohen coming back from injury this year. He figures to take on his usual role as a return man and also the gadget player on offense. He’ll get a few touches each game, especially because he’s still a threat in space.
During the draft, the Bears took running back Khalil Herbert out of Virginia Tech in the sixth round. He figures to compete for a kick return role, but could also take some work in the backfield. Herbert should have no problem making the roster and may see the field here and there as a rookie.
If the Bears wish to stick with three running backs, Williams would be the odd man out. It might not make sense to stick with just three, but that’s not out of the realm of possibilities.
Also not too crazy of a thought: the Bears could, for some reason, stick with Ryan Nall over Williams. Most fans would disagree with this decision, but Nall has stuck around for a couple of seasons and the coaching staff seems to like him a lot. Again, this isn’t the ideal move if you’d ask the fans — but it’s a possibility.
