Chicago Bears with the most to prove in 2021: Cole Kmet

Tight ends rarely develop quick enough to make a big impact as a rookie. So, it’s not a bad thing that we saw smaller production from Cole Kmet in his first season. But, in his second year? Expectations should be high.

Think back to the 2020 NFL Draft when the Bears used their first pick on Kmet. They did not have a selection in the first round, therefore this pick was an important one. Using it on a tight end was a risky move, but Kmet had all the makings of a solid pro.

Next year, Jimmy Graham will be gone. This is going to be Kmet’s turn to shine. This season, we have to see a second-year leap from Kmet that proves the Bears made a wise decision drafting him in the second round last year. We have to see him take advantage of any targets, early and often.

If Kmet does not take a big step forward in 2021, then the Bears may be looking to address the tight end position in a big way next year. Regardless, tight end will be a need for this team in 2022. It’s now on Kmet to ensure the Bears don’t need to make a hefty investment in a co-pilot.
