Chicago Bears: 5 defensive free agents worth signing by training camp
Chicago Bears Free Agent Option: Kwon Alexander, ILB
No one should be surprised by the fact I have Kwon Alexander on this list. I know these guys are older and dealing with injury concerns, but Alexander is not old at all. He will be 27 this season. In comparison that is four years younger than Danny Trevathan. Alexander could be the changing of the guard that the Chicago Bears need at inside linebacker in 2022.
Signing Alexander to a 2021 contract allows him to learn Sean Desai’s defense, see some serious reps as the third linebacker option behind Roquan Smith and Trevathan, and prove he is healthy again after a serious Achilles injury. All signs are pointing to Alexander being healthy by the start of the season, why not bring him into training camp in late July and see where he’s at?
When healthy, Alexander is a complete beast. While in Tampa Bay, he had seasons of 145 and 97 combined tackles. Pairing him with Smith going forward after the 2021 season would be amazing. The 2021 season could be his way to ease back into things as he wouldn’t need to be one of the main two linebackers. Not to mention, we know that Trevathan has struggled with injuries himself as he’s only played all 16 games twice during his five years in Chicago.
Plus, just as the other two free agents listed, Alexander should not break the bank at this point.
