Chicago Bears Free Agent Option: Steven Nelson, CB

The last guy on my list was rumored to be of interest to the Chicago Bears a while back. The Chicago Bears could definitely use the help of another cornerback in my opinion. I know the signing of Desmond Trufant is supposed to help soften the blow of losing Kyle Fuller, but Trufant is not in the same stratosphere as Fuller in my opinion.

Steven Nelson on the other hand would make me feel much better about this defense. He is likely to cost the most out of these five free agents, but the fact he has not signed somewhere yet means his price is likely to start coming down.

We have spoken about Nelson more than once at BGO. Although he doesn’t have the flashy stats in the interception column, he does a great job at covering wide receivers in this league. He has not allowed more than 58% of the passes thrown his way to be completed over the last three years. He struggled more last season by giving up seven touchdowns, but that still only equated to a 97.0 quarterback rating. In 2019, he did not allow any touchdowns. He’s likely to fall somewhere in between in 2021.

In today’s NFL, teams play with three corners often and although I like what I am hearing about Kindle Vildor coming out of camp, give me someone who is more proven to play alongside probably the weakest group on this Chicago Bears team.
