Chris Godwin could make an excellent replacement to Allen Robinson

Another wide receiver in a similar situation to Allen Robinson is Chris Godwin. Godwin is also playing on the franchise tag this year unless the Buccanneers find a way to sign him to a long-term deal by July 15, 2021. This is the deadline for players currently on the tag to sign a deal for the current season. Now, this doesn’t mean a deal couldn’t be done after the season, keeping Godwin from hitting free agency, but we will have to see.

Godwin is not a top wide receiver in my opinion. At least not in the same category as Davante Adams and I’d even peg him below Allen Robinson. However, he has the potential to jump up and be that guy — especially in an offense without Mike Evans. Evans is a top receiver in the league and having to compete with him for targets cannot be easy. That said, Godwin makes the best of it.

Over the last three seasons, Godwin has finished with seven, nine and seven touchdowns. The season he saw 121 targets is the only year he broke 1,000 yards with 1,333. Remember though, Allen Robinson has seen 150+ targets his last two years. Putting Godwin in the Chicago Bears offense could be what Godwin needs to be considered great.

Godwin is not the same type of receiver as Robinson. He has speed and the ability to take a pass to the house on nearly every play. The best part is that Godwin will only be 26 next season. Pairing him up with Justin Fields for years to come would be an excellent situation for this Chicago Bears offense.
