Chicago Bears Training Camp: 5 players who must step up
The Chicago Bears defense needs Jaylon Johnson to step up this season
Another player not looking to hold onto a roster spot but also needs to step up in training camp is Jaylon Johnson. Johnson is not even fighting for his place on the depth chart. He is already one of the starting outside corners and is most likely to be counted on as the CB1. That is not enough for him to look mediocre in training camp though.
New defensive coordinator Sean Desai is going to be looking to get mass production out of his sophomore corner. Johnson had a very solid rookie campaign until he wound up going on injured reserve after he injured his shoulder in Week 14. Johnson needs to prove the Chicago Bears right by filling Kyle Fullers’ shoes immediately this year.
Last season, Johnson finished the year with some very impressive advanced stats. The rookie only allowed 56.4% of his targets to be completed. That is very impressive when he was targeted 78 times. Where Johnson needs to step it up though is the turnover game. The rookie had an impressive 15 pass deflections (in 13 games mind you), but could not secure a single interception. Kyle Fuller was not a big interceptor either (with the exception of 2018), but he came away with enough to be considered dangerous.
