The Chicago Bears could look to add some defensive depth

Taven Bryan, DT – Jacksonville Jaguars

A first-round pick in 2018, Taven Bryan has not lived up to what most thought he could become. He is a huge man and can be a wrecking ball, but his energy and his feel for the game are just not where they need to be for a fourth-year player.

He is switching to a 3-4 end now with a new defensive scheme in Jacksonville, which could spark his pass rush skills. After spending the last few years playing in the middle of the line, kicking him outside could help tap into the potential he still might have.

The Bears have good depth on the defensive line right now, but with some question marks still looming around the return of Eddie Goldman, adding more depth can go a long way. Bryan is still young and is looking to prove himself. He could learn a lot from a leader like Akiem Hicks and maybe the Bears can tap into what scouts saw in him to earn that first-round selection.

Jordan Hicks, LB – Arizona Cardinals

Jordan Hicks has been in the middle of the Cardinals defense over the last few years and has always been a very solid contributor. Unfortunately, his age and his contract present some concern for the Cardinals. They drafted Zaven Collins this year with their first-round pick and Isaiah Simmons in the first round last year.

Those two project to be the future at linebacker for the Cardinals, which leaves Hicks outside of the pack. It would make sense for the Cardinals to let him go, even though he has the experience over the young guys.

If the Bears suffer some injuries during camp or just want extra depth on the inside, they should take a look at bringing in Hicks. He is a good leader and is probably an upgrade over Danny Trevathan at this point. He could fit well in this defense and is used to playing in a 3-4 scheme. He might be looking for a starting job still, but it would not hurt to try and bring him in.

There are always some solid pieces to add after roster cuts post-camp, and the Chicago Bears should do their diligence in trying to bring in a couple of players to beef up the roster. If they want to remain competitive this year, depth will be crucial for success.
