David Montgomery was built to be Chicago Bears training camp MVP

Remember what I said earlier? Matt Nagy believes David Montgomery is built for Chicago Bears training camp. Well, Nagy isn’t wrong even though Montgomery looks to prove he is built for game day. The thing is, both can be true.

Running backs have a hard time standing out in camp, but if Montgomery looks to have the offense down pat and looks explosive out there, he could earn the MVP honors. This will happen if and only if one of the quarterbacks fails to stand out. Hitting takes place, which means that Montgomery will have an opportunity to look better in training camp than he did in OTAs.

Montgomery is coming off a great season where he really kicked it up a gear once an offensive shift took place to focus on the run game. Montgomery scored eight touchdowns over the last six games. He also had his only three 100+ yard games during that span. To show how better the running attack was at the end of the year, Montgomery gained 55.6% of his yards over that six-game span too.

By season’s end, Montgomery averaged 4.3 yards per carry as he gained 1,070 yards (tied for fifth-most in the NFL) on the ground and scored eight rushing touchdowns. Montgomery scored another two touchdowns through the air and caught 54 of 68 targets for another 348 yards. 2021 could and should be even better.
