We are counting down the Chicago Bears roster to make the countdown until training camp easier and more fun to manage. We started all the way back at 90 and we have now hit the number 24 player on our list.

Remember this list is looking at only the potential 2021 value that they can bring to the roster. In a best or worst-case scenario, what does that outcome do to affect the Bears next season?\

We are inside the 25 with the number 24 player.

No. 24 Chicago Bears cornerback Desmond Trufant

If this were a list of name-value players, or career highlights, or a list of a Madden-style draft Desmond Trufant is going higher. There were years when the Chicago Bears would love Trufant, who was once an elite cornerback.

Once is the key phrase though, after Atlanta and Detroit both saw the worst of his play and decided to move on. Injuries are the big story for Trufant, but that is all tied together with age.

First the injuries, then you are a step slow, then you are overcompensating, which leads to more injuries. This is the stage that Trufant is currently in.

So, on one hand, this is likely the starting cornerback for week one on the outside. On the other, do we expect to see him healthy all season? No. Heck, we should just hope he gets through the first game at the rate he has been getting dinged up.

So, a starter sits outside the top 22 because even if he goes down, it will almost be expected. Kindle Vildor is a few spots higher than he maybe should be, but that is in anticipation that he and Trufant will be splitting work on the outside. Trufant holds over him for now, but could certainly be further down this list by season’s end.
