On the fringe of training camp, we have hit the fringe of ranking the top 90 players on the Chicago Bears roster. This preview for training camp gave you a look at all of the fringe roster players as well the locked-in starters and players competing for big roles.

Now, we have hit the edge of the top 10 with number 11 overall.

No. 11 Chicago Bears Quarterback Andy Dalton

You could make a pretty quick and easy case that this is too low for Andy Dalton. However, you could just as easily say that this is too high so this feels about right. In reality, as the starting quarterback, his success or failures in 2021 will have huge ripple effects on the roster.

At the same time, they do not really hurt the Chicago Bears in the ways that most players in a position of his significance would. For instance, if Andy Dalton falls on his face and fails, the Bears could start 0-3. That would be a lot of his to take the blame in and would mean that he would be one of the most impactful players. However, his failure will call Justin Fields into duty, and that has the spark to save the season.

Beyond that, if Dalton does well it comes with a ceiling and expiration date. You know Dalton is not going to come in here and win the Super Bowl, so what is the best he can do here? He is not a situation where what he does actually impacts the Bears as much as you would think considering he is the most important starter on the field.

The reality is that when we look back at the 10 best players on the Chicago Bears, we are not going to include Andy Dalton. So, even if he starts week one at the position that influences games, there are more valuable players throughout the roster.
