Desmond Trufant is not a lock to start as the Chicago Bears second cornerback

The Chicago Bears lost Kyle Fuller this offseason as a salary cap casualty. Many blame Ryan Pace for the situation, some blame the fact that COVID-19 serverly decreased the salary cap this year. Here’s the thing, at this point it does not matter the cause — Kyle Fuller is gone. Now the question is, who will step up and take his place.

Well, the hope here is that Jaylon Johnson can not only fill the role as the Chicago Bears CB1, but also dominate the position in the same way Fuller did and Charles Tillman before him. The Bears seem to always have at least one dominant corner. Kyle Fuller is not Hall of Fame material, but Charles Tillman is for sure. Where will Johnson fall in line with these two?

To help soften the blow of losing Fuller, Ryan Pace signed Desmond Trufant this offseason. Trufant has a proven track record, but also a not-so-great injury history. When healthy, I like Trufant to win the CB2 spot, however he has Artie Burns and Kindle Vildor behind him vying for the same spot. Burns was the starter ahead of Jaylon Johnson last offseason before tearing his ACL. Vildor is a fan, and apparently Bears favorite as Ryan Pace mentioned him as competition to start also.

Over the next few weeks, Trufant could find himself on the bench if he doesn’t prove himself worthy enough.
