Chicago Bears Bold Cut Candidate: Patrick Scales, LS
Who the heck cares about the long snapper? I know that is what many of you are thinking. Here’s the thing though. Do you remember Patrick Mannelly? Mannelly played 16 seasons with the Chicago Bears. This was his entire career and he was one of the best to ever play the position.
The Chicago Bears found another Patrick only one year after Mannelly retired. Patrick Scales is not as good as Mannelly, but he has been as close as you can get. When you hardly hear the long snapper’s name, that is a good thing. This is what we have become accustomed to here in Chicago and I am sure many want it to stay that way. However, with Scales dealing with COVID-19 protocols, is it possible the team decides to save some money and go in a different direction?
Scales accounts for just under $1 million dollars this season. If cut, the team could save over $800,000. What if they decide to go with a younger option who would not require the veteran minimum or more? This is not likely to happen because the team again wants to keep with their tradition of having a long snapper you never have to worry about, which makes this a bold take. However, maybe money becomes a factor.
