The Chicago Bears selected David Montgomery in 2019 with the 79th overall pick to replace Jordan Howard and pair him with pass-catcher Tarik Cohen. Montgomery profiled as a versatile back out of Iowa State, rushing for 2,925 yards and 26 rushing touchdowns in his career and pairing that with 71 receptions for 582 receiving yards.
Montgomery’s rookie season resulted in 889 rushing yards for six touchdowns as well as 25 receptions for 185 receiving yards and a receiving TD. For fantasy purposes (Weeks 1-17) this meant a RB24 finish for the position in PPR leagues (points per reception).
Flash forward to Montgomery’s sophomore season, which resulted in a large boost to his production in many categories and a top-10 fantasy football finish. This was a true “breakout” performance, which I will continue to define as a jump in fantasy production for a player that makes them continuously useful for weekly lineups.
Through this article we will reflect on David Montgomery’s statistics and how he performed vs. other RBs, his 2020 fantasy season and then finish off with a 2021 fantasy football preview for Montgomery.
