Players making roster cuts difficult for the Chicago Bears: Jesse James, TE
Rookie quarterback Justin Fields has made a couple of pretty tight relationships throughout his time in training camp thus far. Because of his work primarily with the backups, Fields not only developed chemistry with Rodney Adams but also third-string tight end Jesse James.
While the Bears could have easily gone into this coming season with either Jesper Horsted or J.P. Holtz as their third tight end, with undrafted rookie Scooter Harrington competing for a spot, James has made that essentially impossible at this point. He even caught Fields’ first-ever passing touchdown on Saturday versus Miami.
James is an experienced guy who has spent time as a starter elsewhere, too. He’s been either the TE1 or TE2 on his previous teams and played well when called upon. What made him attractive coming in was his ability to block, but who knew he would form such a tight bond with Fields in the passing game?
If the Bears kept three tight ends, it’s an easy call. But, they may end up keeping a fourth as more of an H-back type. If they did that, my money is on Holtz to secure that spot. Nonetheless, James has cemented his role on this team and made things far more difficult for the other three below him.
