Chicago Bears Surprise Cut: Dazz Newsome showed promise on special teams
Player No. 2: Dazz Newsome
One of the more shocking names to get cut in my opinion was rookie Dazz Newsome. Selected in the sixth round of this past draft, Newsome was a nice player at UNC and was someone who I thought could be a quality slot piece in this offense.
The Chicago Bears don’t really have that true slot weapon and Newsome’s game lends itself nicely to that. Where I thought he would be a contributor right away was on special teams as a return man.
At UNC, Newsome really put himself on the map after his 2019 season where he played phenomenally. That season he put up over 1000 yards, 10 touchdowns, on 72 catches. His play took a step back in 2020 but there was definitely still some promise there.
While sixth-round picks don’t have high expectations, it’s odd to see one get cut right after being drafted. Newsome did suffer a broken collarbone which did hold him out of most of camp and the preseason. Newsome is eligible for the practice squad and may very well end up there if he can clear waivers.
His injury is what may have ultimately cost him for now but I still have high hopes for the rookie moving forward. Considering the team only has five wideouts on the roster, I’d expect they still have some interest there.
