Duke Shelly should not be on the Chicago Bears roster

Duke Shelly is coming off an underwhelming, up and down 2020 season. He performed poorly in training camps and has had many questioning whether he is even an NFL-caliber cornerback.

Shelly is young, of course, and still on his rookie contract. While a case could be made to cut him, I believe the best course of action in his case would be to reduce him to practice squad status. He would not lose potential by being there and have plenty of time to re-work his way up to a roster spot.

To be fair, his competition is below average at best, and with the exception of second-year phenom Jaylon Johnson, the Chicago Bears’ cornerback room is weak and watered-down. The decision to keep Shelly on the active roster could possibly be explained there, especially if Kindle Vildor underperforms.
