Chicago Bears Key No. 2: Don’t play checkers while the Rams play chess

In the previous meeting between these two teams neither game was ever high scoring, nor was it a blowout. One thing that made it really seem one-sided even though the game was closer than it felt, was Sean McVay’s ability to control the game with his play calls.

Many say Jared Goff was a system quarterback because of how good McVay’s offense made him look. In both games against Chicago that sure was the case. It was the complete opposite of what Nagy was able to accomplish.

McVay seemed to always stay one step ahead, and always had a call to get the Rams out of situations. He was able to tire out the Bears’ defense and keep them on their toes, all while having Jared Goff under center. With an improvement like Matthew Stafford, it might be even more complex and harder to stop. Giving a lead to McVay is another thing the Bears must avoid, especially towards the later parts of the game.

Chicago Bears Key No.1: A Justin Fields appearance may fix all the problems

Everything I had mentioned could not go as planned and everything I said could just fall apart. One thing that seems to be the Bears‘ “get out of jail card” is Justin Fields. Realistically he gives this team the best option to win the game. The speed at which he plays is something that is needed against last season’s top-rated defense in the NFL.

Buying time with his legs and extending plays may result in longer sustained possessions offensively. If Matt Nagy was willing to pull Trubisky back in 2019 on Sunday Night Football versus the Los Angeles Rams down 17-7 for Chase Daniels, I wonder what his leash for Andy Dalton is. Reports are already out that the Bears have a package of plays designed to get Fields into the game unless Dalton is playing lights-out football.
