Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy is most to blame for their Week 1 loss
On the Bears’ first drive, David Montgomery ripped off a 41-yard scamper. Following that run, Montgomery didn’t touch the ball again on that drive. That drive ended, of course, with a Dalton interception. The Rams would go on to score a touchdown, leading 7-0.
On the Bears’ second drive, Montgomery rushed for a 14-yard gain on the first play. Over the course of the next six plays, Montgomery touched the ball just once. The drive ended with zero points after a failed fourth down attempt. Los Angeles would go on to kick a field goal, going up 10-0.
Then, on the third drive of the game, Damien Williams took over. Montgomery didn’t get a touch on the entire drive, which lasted six plays before Dalton was sacked and fumbled. The Rams would go on to kick a field goal on their third drive, going up 13-0.
On the fourth drive, the Bears ran it with Montgomery just two out of the seven plays. That drive ended with a punt.
If you haven’t figured out the theme yet, it’s all on Matt Nagy. His inability to establish the run early on, especially when Montgomery is running well, is simply laughable. What would have happened had Nagy continued running it with Montgomery early in the game? The Bears would have had longer possessions, and maybe, they score once or twice in their first four drives instead of coming up with zero points.
