Winner 3: David Montgomery
Against one of the best run-stopping teams in the NFL, David Montgomery came away with 108 yards rushing on 16 carries with a touchdown and one reception for ten yards. He averaged a whopping 6.8 yards per carry and was consistently breaking tackles and running hard all night. This was not a favorable matchup going into tonight, but he played very well against a great defense.
Montgomery opened the game with a huge 41-yard run, and although he did not have any more huge gains, he consistently found holes and would fight for extra yards. Part of the success goes to how the offensive line found success in run blocking, but they still were not great. Montgomery has grown accustomed to having to “do it himself” as many times blocking just completely is not there. He is one of the best in the business at breaking tackles and getting those extra few yards here and there.
Having your workhorse back perform this well against such a good defense is a real positive to think about going forward. He is a true playmaker and should be leaned on as the focal point of the Bears’ offense. He has proven to be durable through his career so far, although he did come out with an injury at one point during Sunday night’s game. It did not appear to be anything serious as he was back in the game after a few plays.
David Montgomery had the best game of any Chicago Bears player tonight and is on pace to establish himself as a top running back in the league. Hopefully, Matt Nagy continues to call his number and the offensive line plays well enough to give him some space to work with.
After a night with a lot of negatives and losers, it was good to see that a few players stood out and had solid games. Hopefully, these players build on their success against the Rams and continue as main producers every game.
