1. Protect the ball

This is rule number one for any quarterback. Beyond all other issues, this is where Fields will need to show significant steps forward. Fields turned it over once on Sunday, and it very quickly could have been twice. First, he fumbled and was fortunate not to lose the ball. He climbed and grabbed it back at the last second.

Still, the fumble is on him; he held the ball out with his right hand as he scrambled. He wanted to be a passer while on the move, but he has to realize defenders will close on you much faster in the NFL than in college. You have to be ball-aware.

Then, Fields was the victim of a great defensive look. Logan Wilson showed blitz, and Fields was sure he was coming. When he dropped, Fields was shocked, considering he threw the ball right to him, expecting there just to be space.

This is obvious, but two turnovers when you did not even play the first quarter is an issue. All five of these things work together, and once some of the others settle in, we will see a better overall product. Still, while Bears fans want Fields to be their savior, and he just maybe, it is going to take time before he is entirely ready for the NFL.
