Chicago Bears Week 4 Offensive MVP: Darnell Mooney

It may have taken 20 games and four different quarterbacks throwing him the football to make it work, but the Bears may have finally figured out how to use Darnell Mooney’s ability as a deep threat. The second-year receiver was Fields’ favorite target throughout the day and was able to routinely slip by the Lions’ secondary for big gains. Mooney finished the day with five catches for 125 yards, including a 64-yard connection in the first half that helped set up a touchdown.

Darnell Mooney may finally have the right quarterback to compliment his game

Bears fans have known for a while about the big play ability Mooney possesses; it was having the right offense to utilize his skillset that proved to be challenging. Both Nick Foles and Mitchell Trubisky lacked the consistency throwing the deep ball for the Bears to make deep shots part of the offense last year, and that’s a big reason why Mooney mainly was used on short passes.

This year has the chance to be different, as Mooney has a quarterback that seems much more comfortable letting the ball go. Mooney’s combination of speed and route running could prove to be a serious problem for opposing defenses.
