Special teams MVP: Pat O’Donnell

Pat O’Donnell has continued his solid start to the 2021 season, downing three of his punts inside the 20 for the Bears. Chicago’s offense was able to move the ball, and it gave them some favorable spots to punt, and O’Donnell was able to flip the field for them.

Another player who made a positive impression was newcomer Jakeem Grant. Grant finished with 94 return yards and had an impressive return get called back for a holding penalty. It was nice to see a returner show initiative and make some big plays on special teams. Grant was acquired by the Bears solely for his special team’s ability, so as long as he keeps making a positive impact in that aspect to keep his roster spot, especially when Cohen comes back.

It’s not fair to ask Grant to be the spark plug on special teams that Cordarelle Patterson was, but Grant could help the Bears’ starting field position, and that offense will take all the help they can get.

Other notes: Cairo Santos was 2/2 on extra points. Nothing special, but he continues to be as reliable as any kicker in football.
