Chicago Bears Hot Take No.3: They should place Nick Foles on the practice squad

Should the Bears move Nick Foles to the practice squad?

The trade deadline has passed, and Nick Foles is still a Chicago Bear. Despite the team’s efforts to move him dating back to the preseason, they haven’t been able to find a trade partner. Foles is currently buried on the depth chart and, barring injuries to both Andy Dalton and Justin Fields, won’t get any playing time.

Keeping Foles on the roster doesn’t really benefit either side, as Foles doesn’t give any value to the organization, and the veteran quarterback would prefer another destination where he could at least be the backup.

One option the Bears have is placing Foles on the practice squad. The Bears have 53 roster spots, and there isn’t much of a point in giving one of those spots to a player who will never see the field. The Bears could use that extra spot to bring someone up from their practice squad or sign a free agent. It’s unlikely whoever the Bears add will be an impactful player, but anything they do would be an upgrade over someone who never plays.

The downside of putting Foles on the practice squad is that he can be picked up by another team if he is put on their 53-man roster. With that said, if Foles isn’t suiting up for any games as-is, so having him back up for another team shouldn’t be a big deal.

Bottom line

I know the Bears wanted to get something back for a quarterback they traded a fourth-rounder for in the 2020 offseason, but there just wasn’t a market for him.
