Hot take: The Bears should activate Rodney Adams from the practice squad and demote Damiere Byrd

Should the Bears move Rodney Adams up to the 53-man roster?

Few players showed more promise than Rodney Adams did in the preseason. Not only did Adams show out in the team’s three preseason games, but he also was impressive throughout training camp. Adams’s preseason performance was initially enough to earn him a spot on the 53-man roster, but he was moved to the practice squad once the Bears picked up Breshad Perriman, who is now on the Buccaneers. As The Bears open up the playbook Justin Fields, there is a strong case for bringing Adams back to the 53-man roster.

Adams had a strong connection with Justin Fields

To the dismay of most Bears fans, Justin Fields spent his first preseason working almost solely with the backups. He didn’t get as many reps with guys like Allen Robinson, which could explain why it has been so hard to get those two on the same page. Adams and Fields have already shown great chemistry in the preseason, connecting on several deep pass plays.  Having a player that your young quarterback trusts and connects with on the roster certainly wouldn’t hurt.

Damiere Byrd has been a non-factor

Despite the preseason buzz of a player with 4.2 speed coming off the best season of his career, Byrd’s role in the offense has been non-existent. Since week one, Byrd has one catch for 10 yards, which is unacceptable for a player who was considered the team’s WR3 at the start of the season.

Bottom line

If the Bears don’t want to involve Damiere Byrd in their game plan, that’s fine, but they might as well replace him with a player who might mesh better with the offense. Adams balled out in the preseason and deserved a chance.
