Team Regretful They Passed on Justin Fields No. 2: New York Jets

With Trevor Lawrence being an almost unanimous choice for the No. 1 pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, the New York Jets had the second-best choice at the remaining talent on the board. With that pick, Robert Salah and Co. selected Zach Wilson out of BYU.

Now, first I want to say that I don’t think Zach Wilson’s as bad as his stat sheet says.

I think the Jets have been super conservative with Wilson, and part of me thinks it’s because he isn’t the guy they thought he was.

Without going into what his talent is, it’s hard to get NFL-like snaps at a school like BYU. The competition and game environment aren’t what an NFL game is like at a school like BYU, so it’s always a risk getting someone from a non-Power Five school.

Unfortunately for the Jets, I think they regret not drafting Justin Fields.

Not only is Justin Fields improving game-after-game, but he’s doing so with a meh supporting cast– similarly to Zach Wilson in New York.

The Chicago Bears have an arguably better roster, but in terms of coaching, I don’t think it’s rocket science to say Robert Salah is better than Matt Nagy. With that, I think Fields would’ve even been potentially better with Robert Salah and the New York Jets.

Whether he’d progress as well is speculation, but from what I’ve seen so far, Justin Fields is someone that would strive to win no matter where he ended up, so it’s likely that the New York Jets are kicking themselves on this one.

Last but not least, there’s one final team that hasn’t been announced for regretting the choice of not drafting Justin Fields, and that team is…
