Adrian Amos continues to be an average, reliable safety in the NFL

Alright, now that we looked at the first season without Adrian Amos in a Chicago Bears uniform, let’s look at how he has been since then. The Chicago Bears brought in Tashaun Gipson after losing Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to the Cowboys. I will not try to convince anyone that Gipson has been better overall than Adrian Amos. That would be dishonest.

However, that does not instantly mean that Adrian Amos has been great. For a quick comparison here is how the two safeties have stacked up over the 2020 season and are currently in 2021:

Tashaun Gipson (2020 / 2021) :

  • 44 Targets / 18 Targets
  • 28 Completions / 14 Completions
  • 63.6% Completion / 77.8% Completion
  • 14.1 Yards/Completion / 7.9 Yards/Completion
  • 9.0 Yards/Target / 6.1 Yards/Target
  • 3 TDs allowed / 1 TD allowed
  • 96.3 QB Rating Allowed / 110.6 QB Rating Allowed
  • 2 INTs / 0 INTs
  • 7 Pass Deflections / 1 Pass Deflection
  • 1 Fumble Recovery / 1 Fumble Recovery
  • 66 Combined Tackles / 23 Combined Tackles
  • 4.3% Missed Tackle% / 14.8% Missed Tackle %
  • 0 Sacks / 1 Sack
  • 0 TFLs / 1 TFLs

Adrian Amos (2020 / 2021):

  • 52 Targets / 30 Targets
  • 35 Completions / 23 Completions
  • 67.3% Completions / 76.7% Completions
  • 11.0 Yards/Completion / 8.6 Yards/Completion
  • 7.4 Yards/Target / 6.6 Yards/Target
  • 2 TDs allowed / 1 TD allowed
  • 85.7 QB Rating Allowed / 99.0 QB Rating Allowed
  • 2 INTs / 2 INTs
  • 9 Pass Deflections / 6 Pass Deflections
  • 83 Combined Tackles / 60 Combined Tackles
  • 10.8% Missed Tackle% / 3.2% Missed Tackle%
  • 2 Sacks / 0 Sacks
  • 4 TFLs / 0 TFLs

As you can see, Gipson was better in 2020 than he has been this season, but he also has been better in certain areas in both years than Amos has been. Amos has been the better run defender, but their coverage skills are not too far off from one another. Now on top of that, we can compare the salary again, and well, Gipson costs less than a 1/3 of what Amos costs.
