Chicago Bears Player to Build Around No. 6: Jaylon Johnson

Onto the defensive side of the football. When we think about the young players on this team that need to be built around, Jaylon Johnson instantly jumps out at me. He’s not the only player that the team must build around on the defensive side of the ball, but he is one of the two most important ones.

Johnson is already proving to be a complete stud. Last season, he was one of the top cornerbacks at breaking up the football. He did not record an interception but came away with 15 pass deflections in only 13 games. This year, he has one interception and already has seven pass deflections in only nine games.

When we look at his advanced stats, Jaylon Johnson is off to an even better start this season than he finished last year. Receivers are only coming away with 52.0% of their passes when being covered by Johnson. He has also limited his targets to only 7.9 yards — a full yard less than he allowed last season. Johnson has given up two touchdowns this year and quarterbacks are averaging an 83.2 QB rating while throwing in his direction.

Fans were concerned about losing Kyle Fuller. Obviously, he would probably be having a better season if he were still here in Chicago, but would not be worth the $20 million he was going to be owed had the team not cut him. The thing is, Jaylon Johnson is an even better corner than Fuller was while here in Chicago.
