Chicago Bears: Week 13 offensive and defensive MVPs
By Evan Bruner
Defensive MVP: Roquan Smith
As mentioned earlier, the Bears’ defense didn’t play poorly; they also didn’t play well. It was a very unspectacular performance from the entire unit, with no turnovers forced and only one sack on Kyler Murray that wasn’t credited to any Bears player. Even Kyler Murray’s season-low in passing yards was largely due to the fact he only threw 14 passes. The Cardinals’ offense was put in a situation where they didn’t have to do anything special, and they didn’t.
There was no clear standout player on the defense, so Roquan once again gets this award by default. His eight tackles were a team-high, and he also added a tackle for loss.
Similar to Montgomery, Chicago is asking a lot out of Smith, with Khalil Mack done for the season. He’s the only Bear that is currently on pace to make a pro bowl, and his athletic ability makes him one of the most versatile linebackers in the league. The problem is great defenses need several impact players. The 2018 Bears defense had three all-pros and multiple others who played a pro bowl level. Sean Desai has been dealt a tough hand, and it’s hard to see this defense being consistently good down the home stretch of the season.
