Chicago Bears Head Coach Candidate: Greg Roman – Stock Neutral

Not many people seem too keen on Greg Roman as the next head coach of the Chicago Bears. Honestly, I don’t understand the logic. Roman is another coach who is on my shortlist. He is nothing like Matt Nagy when it comes to trying to force his roster to play his scheme. Instead, he caters his scheme to his players and their strengths. This is what we have been screaming for here in Chicago for years!

Here is what I wrote about Roman a couple of months back and it still holds true:

Roman has been the offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens for the last three years. He was assistant head coach and tight ends coach of the Ravens in 2018. His ability to change up an offense to fit the likes of Lamar Jackson has been superb.

Justin Fields would do well with a coach like Greg Roman. Fields is a mobile quarterback, but not in the same sense as Lamar Jackson. Fields is more of a pure thrower out of the pocket than Jackson. However, he still has that dual-threat ability with his 4.4 speed. The Ravens’ offense has been up and down this season, but they are still fifth in total yards. The scoring isn’t there this season as they are 16th in points, but last year they were seventh and in 2019 they led the league in scoring.

If we look purely at offensive scoring throughout Greg Roman’s nine-year career as an offensive coordinator, he has only ranked less than 15th twice and technically one of those years is the current season, which the team could still work their way into the top 15 before the year is over. The 49ers were 11th during three of his four seasons and 25th in his final year. Buffalo was 12th (2015) and 10th (2016) in scoring under Roman.

Roman just doesn’t seem to get recognized as a top candidate by many and I don’t understand why. As I said, he is in my top five.
