The Chicago Bears have never fired a coach during the season. However, when Bears coaches do get fired, you can almost always point back to a Green Bay Packers loss as the rock bottom moment of the tenure.
When Lovie Smith lost at home to the Packers to almost ensure the Bears would not make the playoffs, his time was up. Marc Trestman was embarrassed on Sunday Night Football by the Packers, and Bears fans will always remember John Fox challenging a play at the one-yard line only to see it reversed and given to the Packers.
Now, Matt Nagy has his moment against the Packers that will ensure his firing. He will be just another story in the list.
The Bears came out hot, but up 24-14, they lost 31-6 the final stretch. The complete breakdown is one thing, but the decision that Nagy made down 38-27 will be remembered forever.
It was fourth and inches in the fourth quarter. Down by 11, anyone with a pulse would go for it. You are down two scores, and trying to win. Your defense allowed 38 to that point, and that includes 17 in the second half alone. So, Matt Nagy decided not to go for it on fourth and inches, and punt the ball back to the Packers hot offense.
The Packers took 9 minutes off of the clock, they went 71 yards and punched in a touchdown to end the game once and for all. Everyone saw that coming besides Matt Nagy apparently.
Had the Bears been stuffed on fourth and inches, they would have likely given up a touchdown, but at least they would not have killed nine minutes of the game clock.
Bears fans will complain that a bad call ruined a fumbled punt, but the Bears did not deserve the recovery after such a cowardly decision by Nagy. He deserved to watch the Packers rip his heart out after that decision. We will remember that one for years.
